Creek Trail:
This trail
traverses alongside a cascading waterfall which is fed by twin mountain
lakes at the 2500 foot level. The lakes are spectacular in
scenery, with floating ice chunks contrasting with the glacial blue
water. The run/fast hike continues up to the 4000 foot level where
there is an occasional chance to see caribou and sheep. The finish
of this run winds down past another high mountain lake, paralleling the
old Hershey gold mine.
(2 to 3 hour run/fast hike)
Point Hope Trail:
This trail begins with a
gradual ascent for about a quarter of a mile along a beautiful mountain
stream, them begins a steep ascent to approximately 2500 feet. The
alpine meadows are breath-taking! You'll find yourself stopping in
awe of the scenery. The trail continues along a ridge climbing to
about 3000 feet. You'll be breaking into a run again along the
ridge. After reaching an altitude of 3000 feet, you will change to
a fast hike because you'll be ascending the next 500 feet at a steep
angle (45 degrees). There will be another chance to break into a
run along the ridge which leads to the final destination of Point Hope
at approximately 4000 feet. There is always the chance to view a
herd of about 17 mountain goats here, too. They are incredible to
watch!
(This run is a great interval workout, 3 to 4 hours)
Gull Rock Trail:
This is a 12 mile,
mellow, rolling, costal run along Turnagain Arm. Beluga whales
frequent the Arm and are visible from the trail when they're in the
area. This trail is very forgiving on the joints. It is
cushioned with deadfall needles and leaves from the pines and birch.
(3 hour run)
